The Hulk was my childhood hero. I couldn't believe that it has taken me this long to make a regular Hulk. This last order that I just completed was a combo order of the Hulk and Superman. It was so much fun because of how classic and iconic these character selections were. I finally got to make the two biggest stars in comics (and make them back to back!).

He comes with sculpted pecs, knees, biceps, calves, 4 abs and 2 neck muscles... He's Ripped.

I can't believe it took me this long to make a Superman. Obviously this is the most iconic superhero to hit print and I got to be honest that he is pretty intimidating to tackle. I spent many hours perfecting him. I definately put my all in to this guy and with so many outside distractions I needed to focus harder than I have ever focused before. I am thrilled with how he came out and hope his owner likes him as much as I do. Thanks for looking.

I was fortunate to be invited to be one of the featured artists in this international show located in Houston, TX. The show came off great. Marie put her heart and soul into making this a success! Although I wasn't able to be there in person, I was well represented and my art was in great company!

For the casual observer, the phrase "custom toy exhibition," is intriguing. But what could be so interesting about a bunch of toys? Don't be fooled; these works of art are anything but child's play.

If you're looking for a big show in a small package, look no further than Domy Book's new exhibition, "Cast in Plastic, Art from the Designer Toy Revolution."
Minutes into the opening Saturday night, it became clear why this growing form of art is being called a revolution.

Hundreds packed the small bookstore to catch a glimpse of the latest work of more than 30 different local and international artists, each with its own diverse background, style and personality. The realm of customized toys is where an artist's creativity and vision merge into an art form all its own.

"It's like a blank canvas," Houston artist Justin Anville told Art Attack. "You have the ability to take it as far as you want to go and change whatever you want; it's just a very modern way of doing something unique with the traditional mediums while being unlimited in your creativity."

The walls were lined with toys of all sizes, shapes, colors, and platforms, each one leaving you standing around like a wide-eyed kid in a candy store, unable to choose which piece to consume next. Viewers ate up each one as they bounced around the room, struggling to control their spreading appetites. From the quirky to the bizarre, the humorous to the political, the fanciful world of custom designer toys was captivating the audience in a colorful, curious display.

Anville, who attended the Art Institute of Houston, began his career drawing and painting, getting involved with the gig poster scene early on, which springboarded him into making prints. His experimentation with painting custom toys was jump-started a year ago as his imagination was sparked by artists like Frank Kozik, whose use of color schemes and design aesthetics grabbed his attention. Anville adapted his painting and drawing skills onto the designs of his custom toys. A resin bust primed and painted with acrylics, then highlighted with orange ultra-violet paint on the mask, Anville's piece, "Military Chertrooper" is a play on the classic Star Wars storm trooper with a twist: A modern military paint scheme, faded and rusted to contrast the antiquated world with the new.

"I'm making an indirect comment on the deindividualization of identity by the military," Anville said. "While it's effective and important, it's a statement about the stagnation of the idea, about the old concept of the military in general."
The Custom Toy Art scene is an off-shoot of the Designer Toy scene, Cast In Plastic curator Marie Ung told Art Attack, where hobbyists who didn't have access to the people at the Designer Toy companies bought the regular releases of toys such as Dunnys and Qees and repainted them in their own vision to show off their customizing skills.

"The toy companies quickly caught on that there was a new market to reach and started releasing unpainted versions of their toys, creating a new launchpad of creative expression for artists of all stripes," Ung said.

Some simply paint the existing toy, imbuing it with their signature style and flair, Ung said, while others use the toy as a base to create something entirely new.
The designer toy scene began in the 1990s in Hong Kong and Tokyo with artists like Michael Lau, Eric So and BountyXHunter pioneering the movement, Ung said, with Kid Robot's founder Paul Budnitz being instrumental in spreading it to the U.S., igniting the movement that many toy companies have since followed. The toy movement has never been more popular, Ung said.

Toy customization is all in the details. Houston artist Valerie G's "Manbearpig," based on the South Park character, is no better example of this attention to elaborate character formation, a project taking more than two weeks and 20 hours of work to complete. Experimentation with textures and developing the toy's personality is Valerie G's focus.

First painted with acrylics, over 1000 pom-poms sculpt out the shape of the 7-inch vinyl munny, which was then covered with poly fur, glass eyes, a leather mouth, and polymer clay for the eyelids, nose and tooth. The end result is a plush toy formed from the vinyl platform.

Born in New York City, Valerie G is a professional musician who began her art career as a hobbyist while studying ceramic sculpture and pottery with artist June Woest at Urban Artists Studio in Houston. Her fascination with toy customization first started with her collection of UglyDolls by creators David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim.
"I was inspired by their use of distinct personalities and background stories in the characters they brought to life," Valerie G told Art Attack. "I then realized the potential of my background in sculpting to customize some vinyl toys of my own."
"Making custom toys is a chance to explore another side of myself, my imagination and creativity," Valerie G continued. "It's an escape from everyday things."
As its popularity continues to grow, and the platforms for custom toy art expand to new mediums, artists of all backgrounds will look to put their stamp on it.

Art isn't about trying to sell everything you make, Anville said, that's not what it's here for; each time you create you have the opportunity to make an impact, to affect someone. That's what it's about.

I had a ton of trouble converting this 2d cartoon to a 3d mighty mugg. The problem that I faced was that a cartoon is an exaggeration of the human form with it's own weird disproportions. The mighty mugg is a different exaggeration of the human form and ..... what the heck... to tell you all the truth, I am just not talented enough to take the character and print it in the exact same form onto a mugg. Instead, with the blessing of the person who placed the order, I re-visioned and made my own version of the character. Thankfully, I am happy how it turned out!

When I was a boy I begged my father to take me to see the Stallone movie, Judge Dredd. After hours of unrelenting pleas he agreed. We got our popcorn, our soft drinks and sat down as the lights dimmed and the projector started rolling. After about 10 maybe 20 minutes my father looked at me and said, "This is the absolute worse movie I have ever started watching. We are not sitting through this." We got up and left. We walked into a new movie that I won't ever remember. But to this day I have never watched Judge Dredd. I think I want to, maybe I will. The history the character and I share made this commission piece a thrill to make. What fun.

I want to thank Nick from Royal Flesh Tattoo for hosting such an amazing gallery party. He really went all out for the event and showcased our art in the most fashionable way possible! I really hope I get to work with him again in the future!

Royal Flesh Tattoo must be the friendliest tattoo/ piercing place in Chicago. Their artists are incredible and very easy to get along with. The shop is the cleanest tattoo shop I have ever been in and is really high class all around. If anyone is looking to get a piercing or a tattoo should definitely stop by Royal Flesh. That group is fantastic.

I also want to thank Matt from Graham Cracker Comics and everyone at his shop for all their support. I am happy to have them as MY personal comic shop in the city and I look forward to going in every Wednesday to pick up my books.

Kirby from Rotofugi also deserves a big thank you for helping us promote the event. Rotofugi donated a TON of DIY toys that would make every artist drool over for our live raffle. If you are a fan of vinyl toys you already know the caliber of Rotofugi's shop and if you are new to the great scene, walking into Rotofugi is similar to walking into a toy utopia. They have everything related to the genre and are extremely helpful all around.

These companies simply rock.

Fuller, BALD and Fried Gold all kicked major ass with their customs and made the gallery extremely badass! Getting to hang out with Fuller for a few days was really cool for me. That guy is a hell of a time and his talent is above and beyond.

He is top heavy which is why he has tiny toe lifts under the bottom of his foot to help him stand up straight. I went with the bloody teeth look because I always felt Venom is at his best when eating someone or something.

So awhile ago my friend asked me if I would donate a mighty mugg custom for her charity event coming up. I was in a good mood so I agreed. The charity is called Pinups for Pitbulls http://www.pinupsforpitbulls.com/ which is for all those pups that are mistreated. Anyways, I STRUGGLED with this one. And my deadline is up so after long hours and hard work this was the best thing I could come up with. It's a Pinup Model with a Pitbull. I'm not thrilled with the way it came out but I am also not ashamed of it.

Got the official approval from the man himself, Mr. George RR Martin. I made one minor mistake and gave Jaime the red Lannister cape instead of the white King's guard cap. I'll be taking care of that error and fixing it shortly. It is an easy fix. I suppose that's what happens when I make this straight from my memory. I haven't read the books in awhile but picked up a hardcover of Game of Thrones so I think I will crack it open sooner than later.

So, my best friend and I are big fans of the book series Song of Fire and Ice by George R. R. Martin. The problem is that there are 4 books (each lasting over 1,000 pages) and the series is not close to being over. We have been waiting for the new book that keeps getting its release date pushed further and further back. My buddy found out that George is gonna be at this Comic Con in Chicago this weekend and we decided we had to confront the man and tell him to get moving on getting that book out. Nice excuse to go to my 2nd comic con ( haven't been to one for probably over 10 years)

So after a discussion I decided to mugg one of my favorite character's from the book ,Jaime Lannister the King Slayer, real fast and have Georgey place his john hancock on it.

There aren't many reference pictures out ther and the onces that are are all fan art so I went stricktly from memory so I hope I got the jist of the character.

The Sword is customized by me as well.

Why Ch'p you ask? When I was a child I got a Green Lantern Comic book from Toys R Us. I was so excited to finally get a Green Lantern Comic since he was SOOOOO cool (Hal Jordan). I open the book expecting Hal Jordan and I get a story about John Stewart and Ch'p. I was so confused but I loved it all the same. And forever since Ch'p was part of my heart. I made the costume version of the one that was in my comic book

Finished a 4 piece box set for the Fugitive Toy convention table for shocase purpose! I was lucky enough to be asked to do this and have freedom to pick what I wanted to make. I'm a huge X-Force fan so that's who I picked. Made the muggs and Fried Gold Productions created the box art for me and did a fabulous job!

Warpath is the 1st of an ordered X-Force set. The current X-Force is a secret team appointed by the X-Men to exterminate people who are threats. That's right folks, they are straight up murdering the enemy!
Warpath is one of my old time cult favorites and I absolutely love this series. I hope I did him justice. I loved making him and can't wait to finish the set! He comes with custom knives and leather straps with sculpted belt and gloves. He's also covered in blood from his recent mission. ha

Very interesting comission. The art work is really REEAAALY basic which actually made this a more difficult custom for me. I got through it. I picked up the Graphic Novels and they are pretty entertaining. Not my style of art but I did my best to stick with what the artist does. Fun story and I guess it's going to be a movie sooner or later. Go check it out. I sculpted the ears and tail.

The first Sentry I made awhile ago was suppose to be a trade with another customizer. Well, he backed out of the trade while I was in the middle of making his requested Sentry. Not only was it a crappy thing to do but he insisted on a few things that I didn't really want to do. Since the old version always stirred up negative feelings for me I decided to repaint him the way I wanted him to be in the first place before I sent him out to a new home (He was adopted by a great couple!). This was the only time I've been burned by a different customizer. Everyone else has been stand up people.

This was a present for my grandfather who bleeds purple. Both him and my grandmother are Northwestern alumni and are diehards. They have season tickets to both the football and basketball games and have had them ever since I can remember. They rarely, if ever, miss a game. My grandfather opened it up today and Loved it. He is bringing it with him to the game tomorrow to show it off to his fellow diehard friends. Most satisfying mugg ever!
